Mavericks Finalize Coaching Staff

Columbus Mavericks President & Director of Hockey Operations, Joey Recktenwald, announced on Tuesday, that the team had finalized its coaching staff for the 2019-2020 inaugural season. The Mavericks will be lead by Head Coach, Darryl Noren, along with Assistant Coaches Brian Thompson and Dustin Carlson.
Darryl Noren spent his Junior hockey career with the Richester Mustangs of the USHL before playing his college hockey with the University of Illinois - Chicago in the CCHA. Following college, Noren spent 10 years playing in the ECHL, spending most of his career with the Greensboro Monarchs and Charlotte Checkers. Following his playing career, Noren coached for the Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL and Winston-Salem Parrots of the ACHL. Noren was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame, along with the class of 2010.
Brian Thompson is an alumni of the Mavericks’ Tier III Jr. A predecessors, the Columbus Stars and Columbus Jr. Blue Jackets. Following his junior hockey career in Columbus, Thompson played ACHA D1 college hockey for the University of Central Oklahoma, helping to lead the team to their first ACHA Final Four appearance. Since graduating, Thompson has been making his presence felt in the local hockey community as the Head Coach of the Westerville High School (OSHL) and Assistant Coach of the Hilliard High School (OSHL) hockey programs.
Dustin Carlson will be providing his coaching expertise to the Mavericks’ Goalies. Carlson was a 4-year member of the Ohio State University (CCHA/Big10 D1) hockey program here in Columbus. Following college, Carlson spent the next 6 seasons playing for several Minor Pro teams in the ECHL and SPHL. Following his playing career, Carlson made his return to Columbus in 2018 as the Volunteer Assistant coach of the Ohio State University men’s hockey team.
